King Vijayendra of the Bangra Kingdom greedily seeks to seize Kantara’s sacred spice garden — believed to be blessed by gods. When he intrudes into the forest, guardian spirits manifest and kill him.

His son Rajashekhara, traumatized by his father’s death, becomes king and forbids anyone from entering the forest. He fathers:
