🪶 Setting & Theme
Chapter 1 takes us to pre-colonial coastal Karnataka, during the Kadamba dynasty, expanding the lore hinted at in the original Kantara. It weaves together faith, nature, folklore, spiritual belief systems, tribal rights and power struggles. Mythical guardian spirits (daivas) like Panjurli and Guliga play central roles in how the land’s destiny unfolds.
🧠Plot Overview
🌳 Prologue: The Legend
The story begins by referencing the disappearance of Annappa during a Bhoota Kola ritual in 1970 — a mystical event from the first film that sparked the legend of Kantara’s sacred forest.
👑 The Ancient Conflict
-
King Vijayendra of the Bangra Kingdom greedily seeks to seize Kantara’s sacred spice garden — believed to be blessed by gods. When he intrudes into the forest, guardian spirits manifest and kill him.
-
His son Rajashekhara, traumatized by his father’s death, becomes king and forbids anyone from entering the forest. He fathers:
-
Kulashekhara — reckless and prideful
-
Kanakavathi — dutiful and poised
🌾 Enter Berme
-
In Kantara village, a miraculously-found boy is raised by a tribal woman and named Berme. As he grows, he ventures beyond the forest into the Bangra Kingdom.
-
Berme discovers that Kantara’s sacred spices are being exploited through unfair trade. Deciding to empower his own community, he cultivates and trades the spices independently — symbolizing resistance against exploitation.
❤️ Love and Betrayal
-
Berme and Kanakavathi fall in love, but tensions rise when Kulashekhara attacks the tribe for defying the kingdom. Berme’s foster mother dies in the assault, unleashing Guliga’s spirit, who possesses Berme and leads him to kill Kulashekhara in a parallel death to Vijayendra’s.
🔮 Power Play and Rituals
-
Rajashekhara returns to rule, and a sacred temple ritual (Brahmakalasha) goes awry when a Shivalinga cracks, risking cosmic imbalance. Berme helps restore harmony, but a mysterious illness afflicts the village children.
-
Berme then learns Kanakavathi has been conspiring against the tribe, influenced by the Kadapa clan’s forbidden rituals to harness divine power
⚔️ Climax: War and Divine Triumph
-
Berme declares war on the Bangra Kingdom. During the battle:
-
He discovers a hidden sacred chamber with a Shivalinga and divine trishul.
-
Guliga’s spirit again possesses him.
-
As Panjurli ignites the final assault, Berme — now empowered by Chavundi, the goddess of feminine power — kills both Kanakavathi and Rajashekhara, ending the conflict and restoring peace.
-
🕳️ Epilogue
Berme dives back into the mystical well and disappears, linking his legend to the later disappearance of Annappa and Kaadubettu Shiva — looping back into the original Kantara’s mystery and setting up future stories.
